Young and female pine grosbeaks don't have the dramatic pink heads the males do. They are still fun to watch. Winter time means there is less for them to eat so the Mountain Ashes berries attract them. Sometimes the wind blows off the ripe berries and some times the bird does not have a tight grasp and they drop. There are often birds and other critters that eat the dropped berries.
